GWA is one of the most important numbers in your school life. But what does it mean? Let us explain it in simple words.
GWA Definition — Simple English
GWA stands for General Weighted Average. It is a number that shows your overall academic performance. Schools and universities in the Philippines use GWA to measure how well a student did in their subjects.
The “weighted” part is important. It means that subjects with more units have more effect on your GWA. A subject with 5 units is more important than a subject with 1 unit. This is fair because harder, bigger subjects should count more.
GWA is used for many things:
- Checking if you can get a scholarship
- Deciding if you qualify for Latin Honors (like Cum Laude)
- Applying for jobs after graduation
- Determining if you are on the Dean’s List
- Staying in good academic standing in your university
Why GWA Matters for Students

GWA vs GPA — What is the Difference?
Many students ask: “Is GWA the same as GPA?” The answer is no. They are similar but not the same.

In the Philippines, 1.00 is the best grade (Excellent). In the USA, 4.00 is the best grade. This confuses many students. Remember: in the Philippines, lower number = better grade.
How to Calculate GWA Manually
You do not always need a calculator. You can also compute your GWA by hand. It is not that hard. Let us learn the formula first.
GWA Formula: GWA = Total Weighted Grades ÷ Total Units
The formula for GWA is simple:
GWA = (Sum of all Grade × Units) ÷ Total Units
In Excel notation: =SUMPRODUCT(grades,units)/SUM(units)
Here is how it works step by step:
- Multiply each grade by its units
- Add all the results together
- Divide by the total number of units
That final number is your GWA.
Simple Example (3 Subjects, Basic)
Let us say you have 3 subjects this semester:

Philippines Grading Scale for GWA
Different universities in the Philippines use different grading scales. But the most common is the 1.0 to 5.0 scale. Here is what each grade means.

Important: This is the standard transmutation table. Your university may have a slightly different scale. Always check with your registrar.

GWA Calculator for Philippine Universities
Different universities in the Philippines use different grading systems. Our GWA Calculator works for all of them. Here is a guide for each university type.
UP, UPLB, UP Diliman — 1.0 to 5.0 Scale
The University of the Philippines (UP), including UP Diliman (UPD) and UP Los Baños (UPLB), uses the standard 1.0 to 5.0 scale. In UP:
- 1.0 is the highest grade (Excellent)
- 5.0 is a failing grade
- INC means Incomplete — not counted in GWA until resolved
- DRP means Dropped — not counted in GWA
UP students use GWA to qualify for university scholarships and to maintain their student status. A GWA of 2.0 or better is usually required to stay in good standing.
PUP, UST, FEU, UE — Standard Grading
The Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP), University of Santo Tomas (UST), Far Eastern University (FEU), and University of the East (UE) all use systems close to the standard 1.0 to 5.0 Philippine scale.

DLSU, Ateneo — 4.0 Scale (Different!)
This is where many students get confused. De La Salle University (DLSU) and Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) use a 4.0 scale — not the 1.0 to 5.0 Philippine scale.
At DLSU and Ateneo:
- 4.0 is the highest grade (Excellent)
- 0.0 is a failing grade
- This is similar to the American GPA system

Pisay (PSHS), BU, NU, STI, ISU — Other Schools
Philippine Science High School (Pisay/PSHS) uses a percentage-based grading system. Students convert their percentage grades to GWA using their school’s transmutation table.
Bicol University (GWA Calculator BU) and Isabela State University (ISU) follow the standard 1.0 to 5.0 scale used by most state universities and colleges (SUCs) in the Philippines.

GWA Calculator College vs Senior High School (SHS)
GWA is computed differently for GWA calculator in college philippines students and Senior High School (SHS) students. Let us explain both.
How SHS Students Compute GWA (Quarter Grades)
In Senior High School (SHS), grades are given every quarter. There are 4 quarters in a school year. To get the final grade for a subject:
Final SHS Grade = (1st Quarter + 2nd Quarter + 3rd Quarter + 4th Quarter) ÷ 4
Then, the GWA for SHS is the simple average of all subject final grades. SHS does not usually use with units the same way as college. All core subjects are given equal weight.
Example:
- English: 92
- Math: 88
- Science: 90
- Filipino: 85
- MAPEH: 93
SHS GWA = (92 + 88 + 90 + 85 + 93) ÷ 5 = 89.6
This is a percentage-based GWA. Some SHS schools convert this to a 1.0 to 5.0 scale using their transmutation table.
How College Students Compute GWA (Per Semester)
College gwa calculator is computed using the weighted average formula because different subjects have different units (credit hours).
Formula: GWA = Sum of (Grade × Units) ÷ Total Units
College students compute GWA per semester. Then, at the end of the school year, both semesters are combined for the annual GWA.
Cumulative GWA — From 1st Year to 4th Year
The Cumulative GWA is your overall gwa calculator for your entire college course. It includes all semesters from 1st year to 4th year (or 5th year for some programs).
To compute cumulative GWA:
- Add all weighted grades from all semesters
- Add all total units from all semesters
- Divide the total weighted grades by the total units
This is your final cumulative GWA that appears on your Transcript of Records (TOR). This number is used for graduation honors, scholarship app or applications, and job applications.
GWA Requirements for Latin Honors and Scholarships
One of the biggest reasons students track their GWA is to qualify for honors and scholarships. Here are the requirements you need to know.
Latin Honors Table — Summa, Magna, Cum Laude GWA Cut-offs

To qualify for Latin Honors, you usually need:
- No failing grades throughout your entire course
- No dropped subjects (in some universities)
- Completed a minimum number of units in that university
- A residency requirement (most of your units must be taken at that school)
Is a GWA of 1.0 good? Yes! A GWA of 1.0 is the highest possible grade. It means you got Excellent in all your subjects. This qualifies you for Summa Cum Laude — the highest honor in Philippine universities.
Is a GWA of 1.75 good? Yes, 1.75 is a very good GWA. It qualifies you for Cum Laude (the third level of Latin Honors). It also meets the minimum requirement for most scholarships in the Philippines.

How to Compute GWA Using SUMPRODUCT Formula in Excel
You can compute your GWA in Excel using just two functions: SUMPRODUCT and SUM.
Step 1: Create a table with these columns:
- Column A: Subject Name
- Column B: Grade
- Column C: Units
Step 2: In Column D, compute the Weighted Grade: =B2*C2 (multiply grade by units for each row)
Step 3: At the bottom, use this formula for GWA:
=SUMPRODUCT(B2:B10, C2:C10) / SUM(C2:C10)
Replace B2:B10 with your grade cells and C2:C10 with your unit cells.
Step 4: Format the cell to show 2 decimal places.
This formula automatically multiplies each grade by its units, adds them all up, and divides by the total units. It is the same as computing GWA manually — but faster.
Google Sheets: The same formula works in Google Sheets. Just type it in any cell: =SUMPRODUCT(B2:B10,C2:C10)/SUM(C2:C10)

How to Improve Your GWA
Is your GWA lower than you want? Do not worry. Here are simple tips to improve your GWA. These tips work for both college and SHS students.
- Focus on high-unit subjects first. Subjects with 5 or 6 units affect your GWA more than 1-unit subjects. Study harder for these big subjects. A good grade in a 5-unit subject can raise your GWA significantly.
- Attend all your classes. Attendance affects your grade in most Philippine universities. Missing class = lower grade = lower GWA. Simple.
- Review before each exam. Do not cram everything the night before. Review a little each day. This helps you remember more and perform better in exams.
- Ask your teachers for help. If you do not understand something, ask. Teachers are there to help you. Asking questions shows effort, and effort can help your grade.
- Do all assignments and projects. In many Philippine universities, assignments count for 30–40% of your grade. Never skip an assignment. Every point counts.
